Google Business Profile·22 July 2026·6 min read

The map pack checks nobody in Perth is doing

Eight Google Business Profile settings that quietly decide whether you show up for the suburb next door.

Someone glancing at their phone at an outdoor cafe table on a busy local high street.

Most profiles we look at are 80% complete and 100% unmaintained. That combination is why a business ranks in its own suburb and disappears one postcode over.

The checks

  • Primary category. It decides which queries you are eligible for at all. Secondary categories help, but the primary one does the heavy lifting.
  • Services. Named explicitly, with descriptions. Empty service lists are the most common gap we see.
  • Service areas. Ten to twenty realistic suburbs, not the whole state.
  • Hours, including public holidays. Wrong hours suppress calls and invite edits.
  • Photos, dated. Fresh geotagged photos beat a 2019 stock shot.
  • Posts. Weekly, written for someone deciding today, not announcing internal news.
  • Reviews and responses. Volume matters, recency matters more, and unanswered reviews read as a closed business.
  • Q&A. Seed the real questions your phone gets asked.

Why it works

None of this is clever. It is the maintenance nobody schedules, which is exactly why doing it consistently moves you ahead of competitors who set the profile up once and left it.
