Why a directory outranks the businesses inside it, and how to use that
Comparison pages sit above individual service sites for most local queries. Here is why that happens, and why appearing on them is usually faster than trying to outrank them.

Search engines reward pages that help people choose. A directory page for “support coordinators in Joondalup” answers that query more completely than any single provider’s homepage can, because it does the comparison work the searcher came to do.
What the structural advantage actually is
Three things stack up in a directory’s favour:
- Query match. The page exists for exactly one intent, and the title, headings and content all agree on it.
- Choice. Multiple providers on one page satisfies the comparison the searcher is running in their head.
- Internal linking. Suburb and category pages reinforce each other, so authority spreads across the whole set rather than sitting on one page.
An individual business site rarely has any of the three, because it is built to describe one company rather than to answer one question.
What to do about it
If a comparison page already holds the position you want, there are two moves. The slow one is building your own equivalent depth: real suburb pages, real service pages, internal links between them. The fast one is being on the page that already ranks, as the listing that gets the click.
Most local businesses should do both, in that order of urgency: buy the placement now, build the asset over the next six months.
